Kids are adorable, right? But what if a baby looked at you with glowing red eyes in the dark and suddenly… floated in mid-air? Welcome to The Baby In Yellow, a strange and incredibly addictive horror game! As an unwilling nanny, you will have to take care of a seemingly harmless baby, but there is something creepy hidden inside. The deeper you progress in the game, the more bizarre secrets you will discover hidden under that innocent shell. Can you complete the mission, or will you be drawn into a nightmare with no way out?
The Baby In Yellow is a free indie horror game developed by Team Terrible, a funny name but behind one of the most memorable creepy experiences. First published in July 2020, the game drew attention right away for its straightforward but eerie gameplay. The game was upgraded with lots of fresh ideas and an "Escape" option by 2022, which helped to create The Baby In Yellow, a phenomenon in the horror game community.
In the game, you play as a babysitter working alone in a quiet house. The tasks seem simple: feed the baby, change diapers, put the baby to bed, and turn on and off the lights. But right from the first task, you will realize that something is wrong.
The seemingly harmless baby in yellow clothes has strange behaviors: suddenly disappearing from the crib, floating in the air, or staring at you with scary red eyes. The more you play, the heavier the atmosphere becomes, and the feeling of unexplained anxiety keeps rising. You are not just a babysitter; you seem to be being tested by a supernatural force.
The quest list in The Baby In Yellow will always show up in the upper left corner of the screen, which will help you easily monitor the tasks still to be done. You must do the assignments in the given sequence and follow the directions. Choosing the action sequence is also very important, as it can affect your playing experience. The total time to complete the game is about 1 hour and 10 minutes, and if you want to explore all the hidden items and secrets, spend about 30 more minutes searching.
Currently, the game has two game modes: Normal Mode and Escape Mode. Each mode has two different endings:
Normal Ending: You complete three nights of babysitting and survive temporarily.
Quick Ending: Collect all the “Souls” and open the toy box to trigger a special jumpscare scene with a haunting lullaby.
Good Ending: Listen to the white rabbit and… throw the baby into the endless void.
Bad Ending: Still lull the baby to sleep like a good nanny and bury your fate.
The Baby In Yellow is not just a simple horror game. Behind the red eyes and strange behavior of the boy is a dark, metaphysical world where all common logic is distorted. The good thing is that Team Terrible has cleverly inserted many small details into the game that suggest a deeper plot than many people think, from scattered pieces of paper and symbolic images to seemingly harmless choices.
According to Indie Game Buzz (2023), there is a theory that the baby is the vessel of an ancient entity named Hastur, a symbol from the Lovecraftian universe. And that makes the game even more appealing to those who like to dig deep and explore the lore hidden behind the gameplay.
